Morocco ratifies the treaty establishing the African Union’s African Medicines Agency

Morocco ratified, on Tuesday April 5, at the headquarters of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, the treaty establishing the African Medicines Agency (AMA), following in the footsteps of some 19 other member countries of the AU.
The Ambassador Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the African Union and the ECA-UN, Mohamed Arrouchi, took part in the ceremony of deposit of the instruments of ratification of the treaty.
“As a member of the African Union and a regional leader in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in terms of infrastructure, technology and experience acquired over the years, Morocco remains very attached to the high quality of medicines and is aware that the health and safety of the African citizen depends on quality medicinal products and effective drugs,” said Arrouchi during the ceremony, according to information reported by the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP).
According to this diplomat, the deposit of the instruments of ratification of the treaty is part of the realization of the vision of the Moroccan Sovereign Mohammed VI, aimed at consolidating common African action. He reaffirmed the availability of the Kingdom to share its expertise in the field of medicines and to support WADA in all stages of operationalization.
The Treaty establishing the African Medicines Agency (AMA) was adopted at the 32nd Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2019.

This second health agency at the continental level, after the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa-CDC), has as its main objective to strengthen the capacities of Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in the regulation of products. to improve access to quality, safe and effective medical products on the continent. WADA is also involved in the field of harmonization of medicines regulation.
The AMA officially started in November 2021 after 15 countries signed and ratified the treaty and deposited their instruments of ratification with the African Union Commission. This Commission continues to encourage all Member States to sign and ratify the treaty in the interests of public health, safety and security.
