Two Moroccan blue helmets lost their lives following accidental drowning, Sunday in Bangassou, in the south-east of the Central African Republic (CAR), announced on Tuesday June 14, the UN Mission in the Central African Republic (Minusca) on its twitter account.

The Minusca spokesman said the drowning took place “while bathing in the river” in Rafai, 700 km east of the capital Bangui. He lamented an “unfortunate accident”.

The UN mission presented its condolences to the families of the victims and to the Kingdom of Morocco. The boss of Minusca, Valentine Rugwabiza, paid tribute to the two peacekeepers during a ceremony organized for the occasion. The Minusca indicated that their remains will be repatriated to Morocco.

In 2017, Morocco had lost 7 soldiers in attacks in the CAR, at three different times (January, June then July).

CAR is one of the poorest countries in the world, rocked by unrest for many years. Much of the territory is controlled by armed groups.
