Niger adopts a law modifying the status of the leader of the political opposition

The National Assembly of Niger, meeting in plenary session of the first ordinary session for the year 2022, adopted, Monday, June 20, unanimously by the deputies present, a bill amending and supplementing Ordinance No. 2010-85 of December 16, 2010, on the status of the political opposition in the country.

This is the revision of the status of the leader of the opposition, approved by the Council of Ministers on May 12, and which is part of the promotion of good governance and the consolidation of democratic institutions. , to enable the Leader of the Opposition to fully exercise his role as spokesperson for this institution.

The amendments to the law focus on confirming that the Leader of the Opposition is the official spokesperson for the opposition; the determination of the methods of appointment of the leader of the opposition and those of management of the dispute relating thereto; the provision to the leader of the opposition of a cabinet, premises and means of operation by the State.

The opposition is required, in return, to respect the laws of the Republic or to contribute to the elevation of public debate by providing public opinion with contradictory information and theses.

The leader of the Moden-Lumana Africa party, Tahirou Seyni, was appointed leader of the opposition in February 2022. The political opposition is a republican institution enshrined in the Constitution of November 25, 2010.
