The Tunisian government welcomes the resumption of tourism in the country, with 2.626 million visitors received from the beginning of this year to July 20, an increase of 113% compared to the same period in 2021.
These figures were communicated on Monday by the Tunisian Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Mohamed Belhassine. The number of tourist overnight stays amounted to 6.2 million during the same period, corresponding to an increase of 146% compared to last year.
Revenue reached 1,578 million dinars (about 506 million dollars), an increase of 58% compared to the same period in 2021. This increase would be due, among other things, to the drop in the value of the dinar. against foreign currencies.
According to the minister, the ambition of his department is to reach 50 to 60% of the figures for 2019 by the end of 2022. While the data from January to July 20 have improved compared to last year, they remain par against below the performance of 2019, before the crisis following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Compared to 2019 figures, the number of tourists, from the beginning of the year to July 20, 2022, fell by 42%, tourist overnight stays by 48% and tourist receipts by 31%.
The ambitions of the Ministry of Tourism remain partly dependent on the evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic in the country. This Tuesday, August 2, the Ministry of Health reported 5,967 new cases tested positive for the virus out of a set of 22,102 laboratory analyzes carried out during the week of July 25 to 31, 2022.
