Burkina Faso's government on September 28 accused an elite presidential guard, led by coup leader Gilbert Diendere, behind this month's week-long coup of refusing to disarm, of seizing loyalist troops, and of planning yet more trouble. "The disarmament process started Saturday (September 26) was forcably questioned by General Diendére who informed his elements that the RSP can not be dissolved by the transitional goverment and it was better to resist," according to a government statement. The Burkinabè army admitted, Wednesday August 4, to have killed civilians while carrying out operations, Monday August 1 in the East of the country, against terrorist groups which multiply deadly attacks.

The press release published by the army staff on this subject refers to “targeting actions targeting terrorist groups responsible for several abuses (which) were carried out in several localities (Djamanga, Djabiga, Mandéni, Bounou, Obiagou, Pognoa-Sankoado) of the Eastern region”.

“During these operations which made it possible to neutralize several dozen terrorists, the strikes unfortunately caused collateral victims among the civilian populations”, recognizes the army.

The civilians affected “were near a terrorist hideout on the Kompienga-Pognoa axis”; they “unfortunately were fatally hit by projectiles”, deplores the press release which gives no details on the number of victims.

For the local populations, about thirty people, mostly women, would have died under the strikes of the army.

The army seems to insinuate that this incident would have occurred because the populations did not completely follow the instructions given to them before the tracking operations of the armed groups. Two weeks would have been given to citizens to liberate areas of military interest.

Never mind, the army said it was ready to collaborate fully with the competent services and the populations to shed light on this unfortunate incident and locate the responsibilities. She offered her condolences to the families of the victims.
