The Supreme Court of Kenya confirmed, on Monday, September 5, the election of candidate William Ruto as President of the Republic, rejecting the appeal of opponent Raila Odinga who had contested the results of the presidential election communicated by the commission electoral.
“It’s a unanimous decision. The appeals are hereby dismissed. Accordingly, we declare the first defendant (William Ruto) president-elect,” Supreme Court Chief Justice Martha Koome said.
The results of the presidential election on 9th August attribute 50.49% of the vote to outgoing Vice-President Ruto, against 48.85% for his main challenger Odinga.
Opponent Odinga, 77, a fifth-time presidential candidate, refrained from challenging the Supreme Court’s decision to respect his commitment to align himself with the verdict of this court. “We respect the Supreme Court’s opinion although we vehemently disagree with its decision,” he said.
Ruto, 55, thus becomes the fifth president of Kenya. While waiting for the swearing in, on September 13, he has already addressed the nation, promising, among other things, economic recovery and peace.
Willingly despite, Kenyans are waiting to see their new president honor his electoral promises, including that of lifting millions of his compatriots out of poverty. It foresees, within 100 days, bringing down the cost of living in Kenya.
