After criticizing the election of Amadou Mame Diop as President of the Senegalese National Assembly, former Prime Minister Aminata Touré, head of the national list of the ruling coalition Benno Bokk Yaakaar during the legislative elections last July, announced on Sunday his decision to leave the parliamentary group of the presidential coalition Benno Book Yakaar (United for Hope).

At a press conference, she said that she would contact the President of the National Assembly on Monday to inform him of her initiative, in accordance with the law. “As the rules of procedure say, I will (…) send a letter to the President of the National Assembly to inform him of my decision to become a non-registered deputy”.

The member prefers to join the non-registered colleagues. She will continue to “defend the interests of the Senegalese people” in complete independence, thus acknowledging her distance from power. “I may not agree with my parliamentary group, but I have to take my independence,” she said.

Only, with one less seat, the ruling coalition risks losing an absolute majority in the hemicycle.

Aminata Touré was approached to take the presidency of the National Assembly. Disappointed with her dismissal in favor of Amadou Mame Diop, she denounced an “injustice”, and a choice based on Mame Diop’s “family ties” with the presidential couple.

The former Prime Minister does not rule out, moreover, the possibility of embarking on the race for the supreme magistracy in 2024. “I will first go to meet Senegalese men and women, to seek their opinion and support” , she launched.
