Gabonese President Ali Bongo appointed a new Prime Minister on Monday, January 9, in the person of Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, replacing Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda who was appointed Vice-President of the Republic.

“By decree of the President of the Republic (…) is appointed Prime Minister, Head of Government, Mr Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze. The President of the Republic has instructed the Prime Minister to form the new government,” the secretary general of the presidency, Jean-Yves Teale, told the press.

Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, 55, a close friend of the Head of State, was until now Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Water Resources. He previously held several ministerial portfolios.

Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda, 59, is a former mayor of Libreville, the capital, and Minister of Defence. First woman to be appointed head of government, she is also the first to assume the function of vice-president. From now on, it is up to him to assist the president, according to the Constitution, without however being able to ensure the interim in the event of a vacancy of power.

The 63-year-old Head of State made these various changes 8 months before the next presidential and legislative elections. The ruling party, the Parti Démocratique Gabonais (PDG), which sees him as its natural candidate, is clearly calling on him to run for a third term.
