The son of the Ugandan head of state, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced on Wednesday March 15 on Twitter his decision to embark on the race for the supreme magistracy in 2026, before withdrawing his message the next day, without explanation.

“In the name of Jesus Christ my God, in the name of all the young people of Uganda and the world and in the name of our great revolution, I will run for president in 2026,” he wrote. But this message disappeared Thursday from social networks.

This is not a first for this unique son of Yoweri Museveni to post messages that cause controversy in the country. Kainerugaba had however assured in 2013 that he would not be a candidate to replace his father, since “Uganda is not a monarchy”.

In addition, Kainerugaba wrote another message, still in relation to the presidential election, which has not been erased. “How many agree with me that our time has come? Enough of the old people who rule us. Dominate us. It’s time for our generation to shine. Retweet and like,” he also wrote.

Willy-nilly, this declaration affects, among other things, his septuagenarian father who has ruled Uganda with an iron fist since 1986 and who could also be a candidate for his own succession in 2026.

It was because of his controversial tweets that Kainerugaba was dismissed, at the beginning of October, from his post as commander of the Ugandan land forces, by his father. He notably threatened to invade Kenya, before apologizing a few days later to Kenyan President William Ruto.
