The Ethiopian Parliament decided to withdraw, on Wednesday March 22, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), party of the rebel authorities of this northern region of Ethiopia, from the list of terrorist organizations.

In a message posted on its Facebook account, the Lower House of Parliament said it had “adopted the decision to withdraw the terrorist designation of the TPLF by a majority” of votes.

It was in May 2021 that Addis Ababa classified this party as a terrorist, around six months after the start of the war between the national army and the rebel forces in Tigray. The Prime Minister then sent the army to the region with the aim of dislodging the regional leaders who were standing up to Addis Ababa.

In the end, this conflict lasted two years before an agreement signed between the two parties in November 2022 in Pretoria (South Africa), under the aegis of the African Union and the USA, put an end to the fighting.

The decision of the deputies to no longer consider the TPLF as a terrorist entity is part of the federal government’s efforts to restore peace in Tigray.
