South Africa spoke on Thursday, June 8, of its willingness to host a peace summit as part of the resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Decidedly, the South African presidency insists on African mediation in this Russian-Ukrainian crisis to “find a peaceful solution” to the crisis.
Indeed, two days earlier, she announced the initiative taken by six leaders of the continent to go to Russia and Ukraine, in mid-June, for a mediation mission. These are the heads of state of Congo-Brazzaville, Egypt, Senegal, Uganda and Zambia, in addition to the number one South African.
Last May, already referring to this African mediation, Cyril Ramaphosa assured that the Russian and Ukrainian leaders, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, had given their agreement to receive this peace mission from the militant continent for “a ceasefire and a lasting peace in the region”.
In the meantime, the foreign ministers of the six countries concerned should “finalize the elements of a roadmap towards peace”, still according to the South African presidency.
South Africa is among the countries that have chosen to maintain a neutral position in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, favoring dialogue to resolve the crisis. This position and its displayed proximity to Russia are not viewed favorably by some Western countries.
