The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, launched, on Tuesday 13 June, once again his appeal to the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to cease fighting and commit to a lasting cessation of hostilities, according to a statement by its spokesperson.
The UN boss is said to be “deeply concerned about the situation in Darfur” and “appalled by reports of large-scale violence and casualties throughout the region, particularly in El Geneina, West Darfur, as well as in other regions”, resulting from the conflict between the two Forces. He is also said to be “very concerned about the growing ethnic dimension of the violence”.
Reminding all parties of their obligation to protect civilians, Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the Sudanese people.
With nearly nine million people now in dire need of humanitarian assistance and protection in Darfur, he stressed the need to end the looting and expand access so that aid can reach those who need it the most.
Furthermore, the SG paid tribute to humanitarian workers, especially local UN partners, who risk their lives to provide assistance.
