UN Secretary-General António on Tuesday welcomed Senegalese President Macky Sall’s decision not to run in next year’s presidential election, according to a statement from his spokesperson.
“The President’s decision is a strong demonstration of statesmanship and leadership, and sets an important example for his country and the world,” he said.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed “the unwavering support of the United Nations to the Government and people of Senegal in their efforts to consolidate their dynamic democratic tradition and to promote peace, stability and sustainable development”.
Macky Sall’s details on his candidacy provoked several reactions, even outside the country, especially since a possible third term was not welcome for the Senegalese opposition and sparked some demonstrations.
The current President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) hailed “with pride his courageous decision as a great statesman”.
“We can succeed Macky Sall, but it is difficult to replace him. I wish the Senegalese people to continue on the paths of peace and progress,” he added.
