Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has reacted to the suspension of funding announced earlier this week by the World Bank as a punitive measure against Kampala after the adoption last May of an “anti-homosexuality law 2023”.
“It is regrettable that the World Bank and other actors dare to want to force us to abandon our faith, our Culture, our principles and our sovereignty, by using money. They really underestimate all Africans,” he said in a statement.
The Ugandan leader has made it clear that he “will not give in to pressure from foreign institutions” and that he will turn to other sources of funding.
Yoweri Museveni continues to stand up to the international community, particularly certain Western countries and financial or human rights organizations. The anti-homosexuality law concerned had provoked many strong reactions, sometimes accompanied by threats in connection with the aid provided to Kampala.
