World Africa Day: African Union Chairperson calls for taking control of the continent’s destiny

The President-in-Office of the African Union (AU), Macky Sall, also Head of State of Senegal, invited his African counterparts to build together the Africa of tomorrow, on the occasion of World Africa Day celebrated every year on May 25.

“If we want to unleash the full potential of our continent, we must first rely on ourselves, strengthen our ranks, be more united and united and believe more in our own capacities to build the Africa of tomorrow,” said he said in a short video.

He recalled that the date of « May 25, 1963 marks the creation in Addis Ababa of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), a symbol of Africa Day which we celebrate with pride today », before to pay homage, among others, to the founding fathers. The OAU became the African Union (AU) in 2002.

For Macky Sall, Africa has made considerable progress, but there is still a long way to go. Among the challenges facing the continent, the AU chairperson highlighted issues of peace and security, the repercussions of the Covid-19 crisis and the war in Ukraine.

These challenges must « reinvigorate our faith in our common and united destiny » rather than « restrict our ambitions and paralyze our action », he called out, urging « African men and women, from here and from the diaspora to general mobilization of energy and intelligence” to “build together the Africa of our dreams.

These are, according to him, “the Africa of roads, highways, railways, ports, airports, power stations, agricultural farms, pharmaceutical and medical products, industrial and digital parks; artistic and cultural creation and sporting genius ».

Macky sall will take part in the extraordinary summit of the African Union which opened this Wednesday in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, and will run until Saturday, May 28. In all, about twenty African presidents are expected at this meeting.

The humanitarian situation, the fight against terrorism or unconstitutional regime changes are all topics that will be discussed.

The celebration of World Africa Day this year is placed under the theme: « Building resilience in nutrition security on the African continent: strengthening agrifood systems and health and social protection systems to accelerate social development. -economic and human capital.
