The Heads of State of Chad, General Mahamat Idriss Déby, and of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, pleaded on Wednesday for Mali’s return to the G5 Sahel, a regional alliance dedicated to issues of development and security policies.

The two leaders spoke at a press conference in N’Djamena where Bazoum is on a 48-hour visit. They regretted the withdrawal from Mali last May and that Bamako had motivated by the fact that the organization had failed to hold a summit which was scheduled in Mali.

“The G5 Sahel was created in Mali. It was the epicenter of terrorism. And it still is. We still hope that Mali will reconsider its decision. We regret what happened. We have hope. Be reassured that our noble mission will continue with renewed vigor because the fight against terrorism is a global fight. It is a fight that concerns everyone. I believe that together, we can carry out this mission well,” said Mahamat Idriss Déby.

“We are still going to get closer to our Malian brothers so that they return to the G5 Sahel,” he insisted.

For his part, Bazoum indicated, among other things, that « the decision to withdraw from Mali is an episode that will be overcome, there will soon be a meeting ».

He also assured, like his counterpart, that the joint force of the G5 Sahel, whose mission is to fight against jihadism, will be revitalized. “We have not yet considered that it is over for the G5 Sahel, we are going to fight”, he hinted.

The G5 Sahel was set up by five countries, including Mali, Mauritania, Chad, Burkina Faso and Niger.
