Burkinabè President, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, on Monday thanked his Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, Colonel-Major Barthélémy Simporé, on the occasion of a slight cabinet reshuffle, and took even the Defense portfolio, according to two decrees read on national television.

While no reason has been given to justify this reshuffle, we know that this initiative comes in a context where the security situation is increasingly threatened by the multiplicity of terrorist attacks. Currently, about 40% of the national territory escapes state control.

The last attack dates back to yesterday. Two soldiers died in an attack which targeted the military detachment of Déou, in the province of Oudalan (Sahel region), according to the army which also announced the neutralization of a dozen terrorists.

In this region, citizens had marched on August 27 to express their fed up with « the incompetence of the authorities » on the issue of insecurity. “The Sahel is united in saying no to the incompetence of the authorities. The populations want to sleep and wake up in peace”, had indicated the coordinator of the demonstration, Yaya Dicko.

Also during this month, on September 5, an improvised device exploded as a supply convoy passed through the north of the country, killing at least 35 civilians, including women and children, and injuring 37 others.
