The WHO on Wednesday welcomed the drop in new weekly cases in its six regions around the world, during the week of September 5 to 11, 2022, a reduction of 28% compared to the previous week.
It is the “lowest level since the start of the pandemic in March 2020”, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press conference from Geneva.
However, at the level of weekly deaths, if the number has experienced a decrease of 20%, in the six regions taken as a whole, the African region has faced an increase of 10%.
Tedros took advantage of this situation of general decline in new contaminations to challenge the need to continue the fight against the pandemic. “A marathon runner does not stop when the finish line is in sight. He runs harder, with all the energy he has left,” he said, inviting the world to do the same.
Faced with this fight against Covid-19, “we are in a position to win. But now is the worst time to stop running,” he continued, adding that “Now is the time to run harder and make sure you cross the line and reap the rewards of this hard toil”.
« If we don’t seize this opportunity now, we run the risk of having more variants, more deaths, more disruptions and more uncertainties. So let’s seize this opportunity, ”insisted the boss of the WHO.
