The Equatoguinean opponent, Andrès Esono Ondo, who won 4% of the vote (9,684 votes) in the presidential election against 94.9% for President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, disputed on Wednesday the results of all the last month’s polls and called for their cancellation.
This leader of the political party Convergence for Social Democracy (CPDS) rejected “the results of the presidential, legislative and municipal elections of November 20” which were, according to him “fraudulent, undemocratic and unjust”.
Teodoro Obiang Nguema, head of state holding the record for longevity in power, excluding monarchies, was re-elected for a 6th term, after 43 years of unchallenged reign.
The political formation in power, the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) won, with its coalition, all the 100 seats of deputies and the 55 seats of senators which had to be filled. In the outgoing National Assembly, the PDGE already had 99 seats.
For Andrès Esono Ondo, the elections “were a real electoral coup, given by a head of state who came to power by a coup and was ready to stay in power against the popular will”.
He promised that his party « will remain firm in its peaceful political struggle for the establishment of democracy in Equatorial Guinea in order to achieve a better country in which all citizens enjoy the same rights and freedoms and can freely choose their leaders ».
According to international human rights NGOs, Obiang Nguema’s regime is corrupt and often violently suppresses the opposition.
