The new President of the African Union, Azali Assoumani, Head of State of the Comoros, believes that terrorism has really exploded, particularly in Africa, since the Libyan crisis in 2011.
He spoke thus on Tuesday, March 28, during the meeting of the UN Security Council on threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts, according to the UN press service.
According to Assoumani, thousands of fighters, including foreign fighters, have poured into the Sahel, which has contributed to the importation of terrorist groups into the continent, as well as an uncontrollable circulation of weapons.
“Thus, gradually, terrorism has become more and more widespread in Africa, from north to south, from east to west. And the terrorist contagion continues, spreading in almost all parts of Africa,” he added.
The AU chairperson has promised to “spare no effort” to ensure that a flagship initiative by the pan-African organization to “silencing the guns” by 2030 becomes a reality.
Also speaking at this meeting, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres declared that “the United Nations is at the side of Africa to put an end” to the scourge of terrorism”.
In his words, “desperation, poverty, hunger, lack of basic services, unemployment and unconstitutional changes of government continue to create fertile ground for the creeping expansion of terrorist groups to infect new parts from the continent ».
