The United Nations launched, on Wednesday 17 May in Geneva, an appeal for 3 billion dollars to provide vital aid and protection to the millions of people affected by the Sudanese crisis inside the country, but also to the hundreds of thousands more fleeing to neighboring countries.

Fighting in Sudan continues and is entering its second month. The death toll is rising, humanitarian needs are increasing and displacement is increasing.

Humanitarian aid aims to provide food, healthcare, shelter, protection and other forms of essential assistance.

“We now need the generosity of the international community to scale up our response and reach all those in need,” Martin Griffiths, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, said in a statement.

For his part, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said that “more than a month after the start of this crisis, countless people remain terrified inside Sudan, and those who have fled across the country’s many borders are in need of assistance, often ending up in places where access is extremely difficult and resources limited”.

Never mind, efforts are intensifying to help those in need. As of May 17, the World Food Program (WFP) has distributed over 5,500 tons of food to more than 200,000 people. Distributions are reportedly underway in Gazira, Gedaref, Kassala, Nile Blan, North Darfur and East Darfur states.

Nutritional support is also being offered in Red Sea state, said the UN body, which plans to expand operations in Blue Nile, Central and North Darfur states this week.

The conflict in Sudan pits the regular army, led by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, against the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo.
