Three opposition political formations in the Republic of Congo, notably the People’s Party (PAPE), the Pan-African league UMOJA CONGO and the Congolese Social Democratic Party (PSDC) launched, on May 20 in Brazzaville, a petition against corruption , whose objective is to encourage the government to bring to justice all Congolese involved in economic crimes and embezzlement of public funds.
The leaders of these three parties, concerned about this scourge of corruption and wanting to challenge all Congolese about its harmful consequences, gave details of their initiative during a press conference.
According to the President of the PSDC, Clément Mierassa, the approach of the petition comes in the wake of numerous « economic crimes » observed in the country. He cited, among other things, the case of the disappearance of the 25 billion funds intended for Covid and the case of the Impulse, Guarantee and Support Fund (Figa).
It is in this context, he said, that the three political parties « are launching the signing of a petition against the embezzlement of public funds and the siphoning of oil and other resources ».
This opponent, who believes that « corruption is the cancer of the economy and hinders development », also relied on Transparency International which ranks Congo among the most corrupt countries in the world, with an index of perception of corruption which rose to 21/100 in 2022.
In a joint statement, the three opponents of the ruling regime say that the “legal proceedings will have induced effects in public governance in Congo. The approach will allow Congolese citizens, among other things, to demand transparency in the management of oil; reclaim people’s sovereignty over natural resources; the realization of a stabilization account opened in 2006 at the central bank as well as the completion of the investigation into the embezzlement orchestrated, a few years ago, at the Agricultural Support Fund”.
