Malta welcomed, on Monday, the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007, which it considered a serious and credible contribution to the political process led by the UN for a definitive resolution of the conflict around the Sahara.
This is what emerges from a Joint Declaration adopted at the end of the talks in Rabat between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and the Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg, on a working visit to Morocco.

In this Declaration, Malta encourages all parties to show greater political will in favor of a definitive solution and to recommit themselves to the efforts of the United Nations in a spirit of realism and compromise.
The head of diplomacy reiterated his country’s longstanding support for the UN-led process for a political, just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution for the parties to the conflict.
The two ministers reaffirmed the exclusivity of the UN in the political process and reaffirmed their support for UN Security Council resolutions 2602 and 2654, which noted the role and responsibility of the parties in the search for a solution. political, realistic, practical, sustainable and mutually acceptable.
Furthermore, during a press briefing, the two ministers called for better economic and political integration of the Mediterranean area and underlined the importance of understanding the Euro-Mediterranean basin as an area of opportunities which offers solutions to a number of challenges facing the countries of the region, particularly in vital sectors such as the energy sector, which has been strongly impacted due in particular to the Ukrainian crisis.
On the sidelines of their talks, the Moroccan Academy of Diplomatic Studies and the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies in Malta signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two parties in terms of research and training, exchange documents, studies and expertise.
