The World Bank has decided to punish Uganda by suspending its funding on Tuesday, following Kampala’s initiative to adopt an « anti-homosexuality law 2023 » last May.

The threats are now translated into action in the face of the firmness of the Ugandan authorities not to abandon this project which provides for heavy penalties for people having homosexual relations, and which has provoked indignation within the international community.

In its press release, the institution explains that this text “went fundamentally against the values of the World Bank” and that, in this context, “no new public financing for Uganda would be presented to our board of directors. .

“We believe that our goal of eradicating poverty on a livable planet is only achievable if it includes everyone, regardless of ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. This law calls into question these efforts”, continues the same source.

Will Uganda be able to stand up to the various external sanctions measures that could fall on it? In 2014, a previous law repressing homosexuality was finally canceled by the Constitutional Court for a technical defect.

Prior to the cancellation, international donors cut aid, Washington suspended funding for government programs and imposed visa bans. Other European countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands) had frozen part of their bilateral aid.
