The Head of State of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, succeeded on Wednesday August 17 to the President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, at the head of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The torch-passing ceremony took place on the occasion of the opening of the 42nd ordinary summit of heads of state and government of this regional organization, which is being held in Kinshasa from August 17 to 18.
The theme chosen for this edition, which brought together several leaders from member countries of the community, is: “Promoting industrialization through agro-processing, mineral development and regional value chains for inclusive and resilient economic growth”.
According to the Community’s Executive Secretary, Elias Mpedi Magosi, the summit will review « progress in regional integration in line with SADC aspirations which envision an industrialized, peaceful, inclusive, competitive, upper middle income region where all citizens enjoy sustainable economic well-being”.
SADC comprises 16 member countries, namely South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Seychelles, Tanzania, Comoros, Zambia, Zimbabwe DRC, Lesotho and Madagascar.
As a reminder, the Congolese leader has been at the head of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) since the beginning of 2022.
