Senegalese President Macky Sall will be part of the delegation of five African leaders who will travel to Ukraine and Russia to mediate for peace in the conflict between the latter two countries.

This Head of State mentioned this trip during the Council of Ministers held this Wednesday, June 14. « Concluding on his diplomatic agenda, the President of the Republic informed the Council of his participation in the African mediation mission between Ukraine and Russia planned in Kiev and Saint Petersburg on June 16 and 17, 2023 », declares the press release issued after the meeting.

According to information recently communicated by Pretoria, the five countries concerned by this mediation are, in addition to South Africa, the Republic of Congo, Egypt, Senegal, Uganda and Zambia. The Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, would agree to receive this African peace mission, according to the South African presidency.

The Brazzaville Foundation, which carries out this African peace mediation initiative, explains on its website that « in the aftermath of the visit of Senegalese President Macky Sall, in June 2022 to Sochi in Russia, as President-in-Office of the Union African, an African approach promoting dialogue between the two countries in conflict was born ».

It announces “a positive outcome to the series of visits” carried out in Moscow, Kiev and six African countries between May 22 and June 5, 2023. The Foundation specifies that “the Russian and Ukrainian governments have been widely consulted and have expressed their readiness to commit to this African initiative » and that it is at the invitation of Zelensky and Putin that the peace mission of the African Heads of State will visit each of the countries.

The Brazzaville Foundation is a civil society organization that promotes and supports African initiatives to give them a concrete and lasting impact.
