The president of the transition Bah N’Daw and the Prime Minister Moctar Ouane were dismissed from their functions on Tuesday, May 25 by the vice-president, Colonel Assimi Goïta, according to a press release read by the latter’s special advisor, the commander. Baba Cissé, on the public television channel ORTM.

Bah N’Daw and Moctar Ouane were arrested the day before and taken to Kati camp, a few kilometers from Bamako, where they spent the night. Their arrest came hours after the announcement of the new government team, but it wasn’t until Tuesday that the motive was made clear.

“In the process of constituting a new government, the newly appointed Prime Minister established a list of government in agreement with the president of the transition, without consultation with the vice-president in charge of his prerogatives, conferred by the charter , namely Defense and Security ”, deplores the press release.

He continued, “such a step testifies to a clear desire on the part of the transitional president and the prime minister to violate the transitional charter, contrary to the oath taken when he was inaugurated on September 25, 2020”.

It is therefore because of the non-respect of the charter and the ignorance of the arrests on the part of the two arrested officials that the vice-president would have placed them “outside their prerogatives”.

“By the oath taken at the same time as the president of the transition and held by the patriotic commitment taken before the Malian people as well as before the defense and security forces, the vice-president of the transition saw himself in the obligation to act to preserve the transitional charter and defend the Republic with a view to placing the President and his Prime Minister, as well as all those involved in the situation, outside their prerogatives ”.

Note that some soldiers who were in the previous government were not returned to the new team. According to some observers, Colonel Goïta, who was the head of the junta behind last August’s putsch, would not have admitted that those close to him were excluded; and the transitional president would not have bowed to his threats.

Assimi Goïta ignored the call for “the immediate and unconditional release” of the two officials, launched jointly Monday by the UN mission in Mali (Minusma), the Community of West African States (ECOWAS) , the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU), France, the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States, which condemned an “attempted coup”.

However, he assured that the electoral calendar would be followed as planned in 2022, and invited the population to remain calm and go about their business.
